Not only do we celebrate the students here at the SU, but we want to celebrate the staff too! This is our third Staff Spotlight of the year and today we are hearing from Jay Bennett who is a ASC Specialist Mentor and Tutor in the Academic Support Team.

How would you describe your job role?
I support autistic students through: discussing and devising strategies to help manage university work, jobs, relationships and social situations, removing barriers to learning by identifying and managing sensory and environmental sensitivities, encouraging self-advocating and arranging reasonable adjustments within university. I also advise and support with pursuing an autism diagnosis, and with DSA and PIP applications.
What does a typical day entail?
I offer one-to-one sessions from the Academic Support office and online. If you think you may be autistic and want more information and advice, please get in touch with me at: jay.bennett@leeds-art.ac.uk, or you can talk to your course team.
How did you get into this type of work?
I studied fine art in university and have worked in graphic design, promotions and events. I began working at Leeds Beckett university 25 years ago in a similar role supporting students with a range of disabilities. I started working at Leeds Arts University 17 years ago and moved into my current role in 2020.
What advice would you give to the students?
There is support available to neurodivergent students, both within university and through government funded support (DSA) and this support can make a huge difference to your university experience and beyond.
Is there anything outside of work you wish to share with us?
I love playing music and singing, drawing, and running long distances, preferably in the middle of nowhere!
