Preparing for Freshers

Welcome! We're less than a month away from your first week at Uni and we hope you are as excited as we are!

We know you must have lots going on at the moment, so we wanted to help! This is a run through of what you can expect from your first few days at Uni, including a summary of what events we have on during Freshers, and some tips and tricks of what to pack and expect in your first days here.

We've got a jam-packed schedule of events on during your first and second week here at LAU! This includes workshops, meet and greets, art markets, community cafes and more! Plus, we have a huge variety of LAU Society events, including ones hosted by our Life Drawing society, our Dragon Society, Plant Society as well as our Toy Collectors Society.

Make sure you head to our What's On Calendar to see the run-through of all of the events, meet and greets and sporting activities happening during Freshers and throughout the year.

You'll be seeing plenty from us here at Leeds Arts Union as we will be popping into some these events to say hi and meet everyone. Plus, you can come speak to us at any time to find out more about our events, the Union itself, or ask any questions you may have!

Speaking of questions, currently you may be asking, what's the next steps? What do I need to pack? What is my accommodation going to be like? What are my house mates going to be like? Do I need to take my entire houseplant collection?

Well, we can help with that! Here is some advice from your Student President Jyot, who graduated this year. Jyot has all the tips and tricks for starting Uni and has put together a checklist of items to bring:

Hey guys, just a few tips from experience: if you’re going to be living in student accommodation, it might be a good idea to find the Facebook group for your building if they have one. That way you can see who you might be living with and potentially chat and get to know each other beforehand. Not all accommodations provide kitchen items like kettles and toasters, but some do, so you might want to wait until after you have moved in and discussed what you need with your new housemates before you end up with five kettles in your shared kitchen! There are, of course, a lot more things you can bring with you, like washing up liquid and kitchen roll, but the same rule applies, and you can always get them at your local supermarket! Remember communication is key especially living with strangers, we all have different habits and routines, so this will be a good way of starting those conversations.
