Monday 20th - Friday 24th May
We’ve made it to the end of the year! Another year at Uni has gone by, deadlines have passed, submissions are in, and for a lot of students, it’s time to pack up and head home.
Moving house is said to be one of the most stressful things to do, so here at the Student’s Union, we want to make packing and organising your things, and managing your waste, that little bit easier (and less stressful) to do.
We’re here to help you with all your packing needs! In this post you will find:
· Places to recycle your items (large and small)
· Places to donate your items
· Info on the swap shop events we are hosting
Note – if you are finding the end of year and/or moving house a stressful thing, you can also chat to Student Advise and Wellbeing. They are always here to help! Email saw@leeds-art.ac.uk or drop into their office.
Places to recycle your items (large and small)
There are so many ways to recycle and we are lucky enough to be in the Leeds district where you can put most of your recycling in one bin (in some suburbs of Manchester for example, they have 4 different wheelie bins to separate all their waste!).
For all your small household goods, you can pop them all in your green bin (and the green bins throughout the university also). Here is a reminder of what goes in the green bins.
For any larger items, you can take them to a recycling centre. Maybe sort a date where you and a few friends can share a car journey and take your larger items to one of the below recycle points (advised from Unipol.org.uk):
If you are unsure about what to do around recycling, you can visit the Leeds council website on waste and recycling.
Places to donate your items
If your items are good quality, rather than recycling them, you can donate them to a charity! If you head over to Unipol.org, you can find out more about places to donate your household items, as well as places to donate food. They say that many of the local charities have installed new donation banks which helps make it easier for you to donate. You can check out this handy map which tells you where the donation banks are and what items they are accepting.
There are also charities that can come and collect your items for you if you aren’t able to donate these yourself. St Gemma’s Hospice and Leeds Hospital Charity both collect items from your home. Follow the links to find out more.
You can also swap your items with us here at the Union – more on that below.
What we have coming up
Here at the Union we will be hosting three swap shop events for you. Each day we will focus on something different for you to donate to others, and maybe find yourself something to take home also. So head to the Union Space between 12pm-3pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to see what goodies we have. Here is what we have coming up:
Tuesday 21st May - Kitchen and Homeware.
Bring your cleaned, good condition items to donate to others. Everything from pots and pans, to lamps, storage boxes, mirrors, and more! Donate to others and pick up something new for yourself too! Find out more via our What’s On page.
Wednesday 22nd May – Art swap and supplies.
Bring your unwanted artwork, prints and more to donate to a new home, plus your paints, paintbrushes, art books, unused sketchbooks and more! Pick yourself up a little gift to take home, and offer other students your unwanted arty bits and bots. More info on the What’s On page.
Thursday 23rd May – Clothes and textiles.
Swap out your old clothes and take home new ones. Bring your cleaned, good condition items to donate to others, and pick up something for yourself too. As well as clothes, you can bring your old fabrics, curtains, throws, old scarves – anything that may be useful for people to wear or use or upcycle. Head to out What’s On page for more info.
If you wish to donate any items, please bring them into the student’s union on the morning of the event.
Hopefully you feel ready to get packing and have a better understanding of ways to get rid of your rubbish! We hope this has reduced some of the confusion about recycling, donating and reducing your waste! Good luck to you all on your moving days!
